Modal Behavior of the Four-Layer Planar Waveguide

Numerical solutions of the four-layer waveguide problem have typically involved extensive computational time and effort. We present briefly the relevant theory and describe a Mathematica-based solution method that achieves high speed and accuracy. The corresponding package calculates the field distribution, propagation constant, cutoff thickness, and propagation loss for all supported modes.
