Electronic Supplement

Introduction

Associated with every issue of the Mathematica Journal is an Electronic 
Supplement, giving electronic documents associated with material in the 
journal.   If your subscription includes Electronic Supplements on disk, then 
there should  be disks packaged with this copy of the journal.   Depending on 
the type of subscription you chose, the disks may be for Macintosh or for MS-
DOS (PC) systems.  MS-DOS disks are 3-1/2 inch, written in high-density 
format. 

All versions of the Electronic Supplement are compatible, and contain 
Mathematica programs which can be executed with versions of Mathematica on any 
computer system.  

Except where indicated,  files in the Electronic Supplement are of two types:


1. Mathematica Packages containing Mathematica source code, which can be read 
directly into any version of Mathematica using <<filename, and

2. Mathematica Notebooks containing text mixed with Mathematica source code, 
intended primarily for use with the Mathematica  Notebook Front End which is 
currently available for Macintosh, Windows 3.x and NeXT computer systems.

Both types of files contain only printable ASCII characters, and can thus be 
transferred and stored on any computer system.  Notebooks contain text and 
Mathematica source code, together with formatting directives.  All material 
other than Mathematica definitions is given in  Mathematica comments, 
delimited by (* and *).  Mathematica definitions in Notebooks can be read into 
any version of Mathematica using <<filename.

ASCII files intended for use on Unix systems will have records delimited with 
Ctl-J. ASCII files intended for Macintosh will be delimited with Ctl-M. ASCII 
files intended for MS-DOS systems will be delimited by CTL-J, Ctl-M. This may 
result in a mixture of files with differing record delimiters when it is 
appropriate.

On the Electronic Supplement disk, files are arranged in Macintosh folders or 
MS-DOS directories.  The sections below shows the arrangement used.  The top-
level classification follows the index of articles printed in this issue, and 
the second level is based on the last name of the first author of each 
contribution.  For MS-DOS systems, file names longer than 8 characters are 
truncated. The name may be modified so all files have unique identifiers.
On Macintosh disks, also included is the MathReader program for reading 
Mathematica Notebooks.  In addition, some Notebooks are Macintosh specific due 
to the inclusion of special fonts or graphics.  These are therefore not 
included with the DOS supplement. 

All the Mathematica source code given is intended for use with Mathematica 
Version 2.x unless otherwise noted.

 Mathematica Notebook Reader, Version 2.0.3 for the Macintosh and  Version 2 
for Windows (Unfotunately still not stable enough for the Journal).

Maeder

The Mathematica Programmer by Roman E. Maeder

Tape.m, Turing.m, TuringMacros.m, TuringRecursive.m and TuringOptimizer.m are 
packages  for simulating a Turing Machine in Mathematica. The notebook Turing 
Machines contains the examples presented in this column.

Mitchell

Bravais Lattices, Surface Nets, and Buchminsterfullerenes by Nelson Blachman.

SurfaceNets.m and BravaisLattices.m, by C.E.J. Mitchell and A.B. McLean, are 
packages for drawing models of atomic crystal structures. The package GaAs.m 
and the notebook GaAs Notebook model the surfaces of a compound semiconductor. 
The package Buckyball.m models the Buckminsterfullerene molecule.

Sofroniou

Extending the Built-in Format Rules by Mark Sofroniou

Format.m is a package for extending Mathematica's built-in formatting rules. 
example.mf, func.mf, sub.mf, driver.f, newton.f, linsolv.f, rksub.f, and 
rkoptsub.f are example files. Documentation is contained in the notebook 
Format Manual and in the directory of TeX files tex docs.

Smith

Notebooks into Books via LaTeX by Cameron Smith.

csnb2tex.c and pmat.h are source files for a C program that converts 
Mathematica notebooks into LaTeX source files. csnb2tex.sty and psfig.tex are 
LaTeX style files, and mma.pro is a PostScript prolog file. Sample1, Sample2, 
and sampleDriver.tex are example files.
