Conclusion

We have shown how the method of generating functions can be used to investigate the null distribution of the well-known Wilcoxon rank sum statistics and the Kruskal-Wallis statistics (with and without ties). The proposed method is not confined to these test statistics; in contrary, the reader should be able now to apply this method to investigate nearly every test statistic based on ranks.
